October 2025 Training

"I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;
From where shall my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth."

(Psalm 121:1-2)

Learn to Bring Help, Hope and Healing...

Alaska Baptist Disaster Relief (ABDR) training equips ordinary believers to step into extraordinary moments of need with the love of Christ. This three-day event is designed to prepare you both spiritually and practically to serve people in crisis, whether through chaplaincy and emotional care, clean-up and recovery, feeding, shower and laundry support, chainsaw and tarping, incident management, or even providing clean drinking water in remote communities. You'll gain hands-on skills, biblical perspective, and the confidence to be a light in some of the darkest moments people face after disaster.

Our next training will be held Thursday through Saturday, October 2–4, 2025 at Laverne Griffin Camp (4495 W. Little Cloud Dr., Wasilla, 99623). There is no charge to attend the training, receive housing, or for meals during the event. For those who complete Disaster Relief 101 and join the ABDR team, there is a one-time $40 fee, which includes your team shirt and official photo ID. This small investment helps us prepare a trained, ready, and unified team to bring help, hope, and healing to those who need it most.

Classes

Advanced Chaplaincy Training

A four-session advanced course on chaplaincy in a disaster relief zone. Chaplains help crisis survivors take their first steps to spiritual and emotional recovery. Every disaster response unit is encouraged to have a spiritual care leader, both to care for those we meet and those who serve. Often we establish chaplaincy centers where care givers who have advanced chaplaincy training meet clients (survivors of crisis) who come for one-on-one or family time.

Advanced Incident Management*

Continues and goes deeper into the subjects covered in Basic Incident Management. This course is divided into three sections: Logistics, Planning/Daily Assignments, and Administration

*You must take Basic Incident Management as a prerequisite before taking Advanced Incident Management.

Basic Incident Management

Experienced volunteers manage the operations, logistics, and administrative tasks involved in a disaster response. They are based in Disaster Recovery Centers, also known as Command Posts, which serve as coordination and usually the housing site for the teams serving within an area of the disaster recovery.

Basic Spiritual Care

Chaplains help crisis survivors take their first steps to spiritual and emotional recovery. Every disaster response unit listed below is encouraged to have a spiritual care leader, both to care for those we meet and those who serve. Often we establish chaplaincy centers where care givers who have advanced chaplaincy training meet clients (survivors of crisis) who come for one-on-one or family time.

Chainsaw and Tarping

These recovery teams remove trees, limbs, and brush from driveways, roofs, and yards. The teams include people who know how to safely use chainsaws, as well as those who can pick up and pile the debris. The teams often cover storm damage with temporary roofing so that repairs can begin in or around the home.

Cleanup and Recovery

Recovery is the primary ministry we strive for following a crisis. Our priority is to help clients get back into a home or safe place. After wildfires, these teams help homeowners remove ash and debris and seek to recover personal belongings. Likewise, flood recovery teams remove water-damaged flooring, carpet, and sheetrock for homeowners, then dry out and sanitize the home to prevent the growth of mold.

Disaster Relief 101

This class introduces you to the fundamentals of disaster relief training. You will learn about the variety of roles you may play in future disaster relief service and how you can help respond and serve effectively.

Ready Church

This course teaches you how to help a local church prepare for a disaster relief scenario.

Shower and Laundry

Mobile trailers include individual shower rooms with hot water that provide showers for our clients (survivors), first responders, and volunteers aiding in the disaster response. Similarly, laundry unit volunteers wash and dry clothes for volunteers and/or the clients we are serving.

Stop the Bleed

This course teaches you basic field first aid with an emphasis on its practical application in a disaster relief zone.

Water Purification

Because of water freeze-ups and major breakdowns communities end up without clean drinking water. Sometimes, we are able to send in a small team with a water purification unit to assist and offer clean water to those in the village.
